Promoting airport environmental management in ASEAN countries

The attendees at the Airport Environmental Management Systems workshop in Bangkok, Thailand.

EUROCONTROL is participating in a workshop on 'Airport Environmental Management Systems’, taking place in Bangkok, Thailand, targeting the ASEAN countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam.

The workshop is organised in the context of the EU-South East Asia Aviation Partnership Project, which EASA is carrying out on the European Commission’s behalf.

It is aimed at raising awareness of State authorities and airport operators about the importance of integrating the achievement of environmental and sustainable goals into the decision-making and the daily running of airports operations. Considering the common issues faced by airports in the region and the benefits that may gained from a regional cooperation, participants will assess the potential of working together.

In the light of the high traffic growth forecast in the South East Asia region, it becomes even more important to assess the environmental impact of airports’ activities in the region and to start addressing these as they can constrain airport’s operational capacity and future traffic growth.

EUROCONTROL has a lot of experience in airport environmental management and in identifying, monitoring and reporting on environmental performance indicators  At the workshop, our expert  Sharon Mahony shared Europe’s best practices in the field and explained what we have developed together with our partners to help airports find common solutions and approaches to environmental issues. The Collaborative Environmental Management, CEM, our environment modelling tool IMPACT and our work on climate change were just a few of items she addressed in her briefing.

Our contribution to this workshop was part of our joint work programme with EASA.
